We’d like to visit the church with our children. Should we sign up?
We’d love to have you visit. If you’re able to call or Email our Director of Lifespan Faith Development, Greta Porter, at 412-366-0244 or dlfd@uucnh.org, she can help you prepare your children for their Sunday experience and answer any questions or address concerns. If you’re not able to call ahead, we’d still love for your family to join us. Your family can attend the Sunday service together on the first Sunday you visit, or if you wish, children are welcome to attend a Sunday School class. Nursery care is available for children under 3 years of age.
Can I bring my child into church with me? Children are always welcome to attend services with their parents. If your child begins to make noise and disrupt others’ ability to enjoy the sermon, we do ask that you take her/him into the hallway just outside the sanctuary, where you can still hear the service. Paper and crayons are available from the ushers.
What should my child wear to church?
Children can wear comfortable clothing. We have no dress code.
When do religious education classes take place? During the academic year (from September until May) parents and children enter the Sunday service together. After introductions, children are invited forward for a Time for All Ages. Once the story is over, the congregation sings the children and their teachers out to their religious education classes. During the summer, we have nursery care for babies and very young children. School age children are invited to enjoy the services with their family.
May I attend a religious education class with my child?
We welcome you to attend a class or two with your child if you feel this will help your child feel more comfortable or if you are simply interested in what happens in the classroom.
How does the church accommodate children with special needs? Parents of children with special physical needs may park on the upper level, near the entrance, in the designated handicapped spots. We have a lift for access to our second story that can accommodate wheel chairs. Our religious education teachers strive to make every child, including those with special needs, feel welcome. Please contact Greta Porter, Director of Lifespan Faith Development, to share any information about your child’s physical, learning or emotional needs so that she can help our volunteers make your child’s church experience a positive one.
What safety procedures are in place to protect children and youth who attend your programs?
UUCNH has a board approved safety policy for children and youth. We require our adult religious education volunteers sign a code of ethics and undergo a criminal and child abuse background checks. We require two adults be present in our children’s classrooms. We also require that our adult drivers for field trips and events must be at least 25 years of age and submit a copy of their auto insurance card.
Does the Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills offer other programs and activities for children and their families other than Sunday Morning Sunday school?
Yes, we offer a Tuesday playgroup for families with children of all ages, including home-schooled children , we have a lifespan sexuality education program, Our Whole Lives, and summer camp for kids. We also offer periodic parenting discussion groups. Other activities are available that can be enjoyed by the whole family; Saturday games night, a summer camping trip, and occasional potlucks and picnics (see calendar of events)
.Must I be a member of The Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills for my child to participate in the religious education programs?
No. Membership is not a requirement. All of our religious education classes, programs and activities are open to everyone.
Are there any charges for the religious education programs or other church activities? There are no tuition fees. We consider religious education an important and integral part of our church mission and ministry. We do expect participating families to contribute generously to The Unitarian Universalist Church of the North Hills as they are able in terms of time, talent and resources to sustain the important ministry of religious education. For some of our programs, there is a minimal fee for materials or a book. Examples include children’s summer camp or a parent discussion book that focuses on a particular book.
How do I register my child for UUCNH religious education? Email or call Greta Porter, our Director of Lifespan Faith Development at 412-366-0244 or dlfd@uucnh.org.
